Tonga (like many Pacific Islands) is a very religious country. Most people are in church; many several times a week. And because of that, many Tongan people call it a Christian country. However a quick look at how life is lived by most church-going people in the Islands will immediatly dispel that idea. Crime and immorality is as much a problem in the Islands as anywhere else. (And maybe more of a problem - it was the church-going people of Tonga who burn't their main town down in 2006, killing 8 people. If it's people are capable of this, what does it say about the condition of the local church and a so-called "Christian" nation?) This is why the work of UCB Pacific Partners is so important . . . "Helping South Pacific people disciple their islands by radio!" So UCB Pacific Partners encourages radio listeners to gather their family and neigbours in their village homes each week, to study the Bible along with our radio teacher. In their own local language. And as they study there will be questions, and these are also answered over the air by our radio teacher. As well as that we offer training for these study hosts so that can manage discussion, application and prayer within their group after the radio Bible study session. One of the things that excites us is when we see people from these groups (and these people come from all different churches) wanting to be water baptised as a sign of their commitment to follow Jesus Christ. This shows our approach using radio and small groups to disciple these small and isolated islands is working. |
All 13 members of this Listener Group came to Christ through our Tongan radio ministry and were baptized in the ocean by our local radio staff |
May God bless you for your Partnership in. . . "Helping South Pacific people disciple their islands by radio!" Graham A Carter President UCB Pacific Partners
