Marshall Isl Fuel and power crisis

Want to help the people of the Marshall Islands?

July 07, 2008

One week away from running out of diesel and electricity
Yesterday I got an email from Steve Clark, manager of Christian radio "The Change 104.1FM".

Steve emails, "The government has just declared a state of emergency in all areas from fuel, electricity, food and basic life sustainment items . . . We have cut back on electricity use by converting to propane and using a grill. This is helping us to keep operating in all other areas. The government is looking to cut all sales of diesel and coconut oil to private users to save it for government uses."

Yesterday this item was in news on our radio stations -
"Marhalls Face Blackout Over Fuel Bills
Needs $8.5 million fast to keep power plant operating WELLINGTON, New Zealand
(Radio New Zealand International, July 4, 2008)
The Marshall Islands has declared a state of economic emergency to fast-track domestic energy reduction and cost cutting measures, while lending weight to appeals to donor countries for help.Despite three electricity tariff increases since January, the national power utilities are projected to face an estimated shortfall of US$17.5 million to $21 million over the next 12 months. This deficit amounts to close to 20 percent of the entire national budget. The Marshall Islands has enough power plant fuel on island to keep the lights on until the end of August.
But if it can't come up with US$8.5 million by next weekend to pay for last month's diesel shipment and a down payment on the next shipment, the country will run out of fuel.
The Marshalls Energy Company has told Cabinet that without an immediate cash injection, it cannot raise the $8.5 million by next weekend."

There are alternative power sources to keep the Lord's ministry operating
Next week we are meeting with Missionary Ventures (our partners in the Marshall Islands) to discuss wind and solar power generation.
This will take a large sum of money to set up, but it will save money in the long term (diesel generated electricity is very expensive, while sun and wind are free) and allow the ministry to be less effected by the local economy.
However, it will take months to raise money, ship the equipment and get it all set up. How is the ministry to operate in the meantime?
Only God knows the answer!

God knew this was coming and He will have a plan
So please pray . . .

  • For the people of the Marshall Islands. No fuel means no electricity, no transportation, which will quickly turn into no jobs and food shortages.

  • For the Lord's work in Majuro. That He will supply alternative power so Steve and his team can continue ministering the Gospel at this time of need in the community.

With faith and courage Steve says,
"We serve an awesome God and we know he has everything in control. . . This is not a message of defeat but one of victory. When we have a storm that's when God shows up and provides everything we need. All is well here and the Gospel is going forward, the Kingdom is being built. We praise God that He provides all that we need! Thanks for all of your prayers and support. Be blessed and have an awesome day in Jesus!"

"You are the God of miracles and wonders!
You demonstrate Your awesome power among the nations."

Update July 15, 2008

Last Friday was the deadline
The government of the Marshall Island needed to pay $8.5 million dollars by last Friday to prevent the country running out of diesel fuel in August. The last news I heard about this was last week - the government said they didn't know how they would get the money in time for the Friday deadline I've heard nothing since.

The Marshall Islands is now in a state of Economic Emergency and all diesel is reserved for government use. And when the diesel runs out in August, so will the electricity which is diesel generated.

Last week we began looking for affordable solutions to keep Christian radio "The Change 104.1FM" operating A donor has offered to pay for a wind generator, but because the Marshall Islands sometimes go many days without wind, this is only a partial solution.
Sunlight and the ocean are other possible sources for electricity generation and we are having another meeting this week with technicians to advise us about the suitability and cost of these alternatives.

Please continue to pray for the Marshall Islands

  • Pray for an end to this crisis - so that fuel and electicity shortages don't cause the people to sink further into poverty
  • Pray we can keep "The Change 104.1FM" on the air, broadcasting the hope and comfort of Jesus Christ to the Marshallese people during this time of uncertainty and hardship
  • And please pray that many people will respond to the Gospel - learning to trust Jesus Christ during this crisis.

I will let you know as things develop.
Thank you for praying - our prayers will make the difference!

"Let the whole earth sing to the LORD!
Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.
Publish his glorious deeds among the nations.
Tell everyone about the amazing things he does."

Update August 25, 2008

Thank you for praying for the Marshall Islands
There is no doubt that the Lord is using the fuel crises to bring about something special that we don’t see yet. The crisis drags on. Please don’t stop praying for Steve and the team, and for the Marshall Islands.
“Do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord, no matter what happens. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.” (Hebrew 10:35,36)

Here’s what's happening at the moment

  • The Marshall Islands have been given extra fuel. But only enough for a few more weeks until the end of September. But this extra fuel is only for government use
  • Thanks to generous donors, a wind generator and solar cells are on their way to Majuro. These will allowThe Change 104.1FM to broadcast at least a few hours a day.

It’s always a great battle when planting a new Christian radio station
God’s number one enemy (the devil) will do everything he can to stop God’s Word being broadcast to reach His isolated Pacific Island people. The last thing He wants is people having access to God’s Word on a daily basis.
And one of the devil’s main weapons is discouragement. So I have been praying for encouragement for Steve and his family.

Please continue praying for Steve and the Clark family

  • Pray for their encouragement
  • Pray for their protection
  • Pray for their personal support
  • Pray The Change 104.1FM will soon be on the air, touching the hearts of many needy Marshallese people
  • Pray Steve and his family and the staff will soon be rejoicing as they see God’s victory over these difficult circumstances

Steve Clark is a man who keeps his eyes on Jesus,
no matter what is happening (or nor happening) around him.
This is from his most recent email . . .
“All is well here in the Marshalls and God is still on the throne and saving souls. Internet has been spotty [he means, more emails get lost than get through!] . . . In the middle of a national crisis God still moves. Praise the Lord! We are moving forward with alternate power sources, working with UCB Pacific Partners and others . . . [We have heard that the government] managed to raise some funds for one more shipment of fuel . . . we cannot confirm that information at this time. However our contacts have let us know to prepare for blackout conditions sometime in mid September to early October. . .

I will tell you one thing though, I am so glad I do not need electricity to preach the Gospel. The churches here have rallied, prayed and are not swayed by what they see. Praise the Lord. Please keep the Marshalls in prayer. . . We are still in the state of emergency in the natural but in the supernatural, all is well!”

“I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what he has done and be astounded.
They will put their trust in the LORD.”
